There is something for all in this land of plenty.

For the outdoor lover, there is cycling, horseriding, walking and hiking the many dedicated paths, swimming (nearest lap pool at Beaumes de Venise), tennis (also at Beaumes de Venise), golf (Avignon, L’isle sur La Sorgue).

For the lover of history, there are the Roman marvels at Orange, Vaison La Romaine, Arles, Nimes, Pont du Gard, Glanum near St Remy de Provence; the Papal Palace and the famous bridge at Avignon; fortified castles and historic house which trace the history of the region (4 km from La Roque Alric is the Chateau du Barroux  which dates from the 12th century).

For the artist, there is the heritage of Van Gogh and Cezanne in landscapes which beg to be painted and photographed. There are galleries in major towns; Carpentras, Avignon, Arles, L’Isle sur La Sorgue, Gordes. Pottery abounds and potters open their studios to visitors.

For the lovers of antiques, there are antiques and bric a brac, found in shops and also at regular dedicated markets such as that at L’isle sur La Sorgue every Sunday.

Le Marche, the weekly market, in almost every town and village is a fascinating mixture of food, clothes and furniture. Farmers bring their produce from near and far and mountain sausages sit side by side with goats cheese, rosemary and thyme, olives and spices ...... a heady mixture for the visitor who may then try his/her hand at local recipes readily given by the vendors. The famous market daily at Les Halles  at Avignon is stunning in its quality and variety, from oysters to foie gras, from truffles to cheese. At Christmas time the famous and secretive Marche des Truffes is known all over France.

For the theatre lover, there are the annual festivals of music, dance and theatre which are held at Orange (opera in the Roman theatre), Avignon, Carpentras, Vaison La Romaine, etc.

For the wine lover, the caves  of the vineyards big and small are open for tasting and purchase. What better way to pass a summer afternoon than in the footsteps of Bacchus.

If one yearns for the coast, Marseille with its Vieux Port, bouillbaise restaurants and its reputation as a freewheeling international port since Phoenician times is an hour and a bit away down the motorway. The charming village of Cassis is just along the Calanques from Marseille, accessible by boat from Marseille or by car along the motorway.
